Calendar of Events

The Calendar in Bioinformatics lists upcoming events in related areas, e.g. conferences, seminars, workshops, courses, etc. It is compiled by Bioinformatics and updated regularly. The Calendar is dynamic, so that only current and future events are displayed, and past events are automatically deleted. Publication of events on Bioinformatics does not imply endorsement by Oxford University Press or Bioinformatics.

The "Search Calendar" feature allows you to search for events by topic, location, sponsoring organization, and date.

If you are the organizer of an event and would like it to be considered for inclusion in the Calendar, please complete a "Submit an Event" form.

Subjects/Keywords: integrative bioinformatics, database and tool integration, Computational systems biology,
Description: Biological data are scattered across thousands of biological databases and hundreds of scientific journals. Current high throughput genomics technologies generate large quantities of high dimensional data. Microarray, NMR, mass spectrometry, protein chips, gel electrophoresis data, Yeast-Two-Hybrid, QTL mapping, gene silencing, and knockout experiments are all examples of technologies that capture thousands of data points, often in single experiments. The challenge for Integrative Bioinformatics is to capture, model, integrate, and analyse these data in a consistent way to provide new and deeper insights into complex biological systems. This fifth meeting on Integrative Bioinformatics will be of interest to Bioinformaticians, Computer Scientists and others working in, or interested in finding out more about, the developing area of integrative bioinformatics. There will be opportunities to present and discuss methods, theoretical approaches, and their practical applications.

Description: Advances in molecular diagnostics has enabled the detection of early stage tumors that will lead to greater success rates with intervention and treatment. Tests are being commercialized that employ a variety of approaches utilizing gene expression, serum biomarkers, and circulating tumors cells to capture information early for non-invasive screening of selected populations. Technologies to resolve and isolate the earliest stages of disease can be used in some cases in combination with imaging techniques to differentiate between benign vs. malignant tumors. The potential for these assays to greatly improve patient survival and care is historic and opportune and will further allow the tracking of disease progression. www.healthtech.com

The course covers a wide range of platforms and more specific topics, such as the analysis of Illumina, Affymetrix and Array CGH data. Target audience: All aspects of the course are aimed at non-statisticians, suitable for beginners in microarrays as well as those who have already been working in genomics. The course may also be useful to computational biologists new to microarray analysis. The course is intensive so a highly motivated group of trainees, looking forward to dealing with microarray data in the near future, is expected. Deadline for Applicatioons: Sept 1st 2008

Description: Drug repositioning efforts create alternative development routes for compounds that failed to meet their clinical endpoint but met safety milestones. Repositioning approaches can also be employed for existing drugs to identify alternative uses or new indications. This can involve screening a compound against new targets, or investigating a given target against new indications. Repurposing or repositioning represents both a faster and less risky route to development. A discussion of how to gain access to data, and overcome organizational boundaries will be covered. Case studies that best utilize available technologies to form a comprehensive picture of a compound or target’s potential value will be explored, and will shed light on how to exploit repositioning towards unmet medical need and expanding the drug pipeline. www.healthtech.com

Description: With increasing resource pressure, drug developers need to make more effective and informed go/no-go decisions as early as possible in the drug development process. This allows the best compounds to move ahead with adequate resource support. By doing more of the right experiments, earlier in the pre-clinical discovery and development process, drug developers will face fewer surprises as drugs move into the more expensive later stages of the development process. Biomarkers, FDG-PET Imaging, Gene Expression, Metabolic Screening, Protein Tomography and other advanced tools are increasingly being used for early confirmation of a drug development candidate’s ability to reach a target, confirm bioavailability and impact on a target or pathway, to enable an earlier, more effective, decision making processes. Leading drug discovery and development companies are increasingly reorganizing their drug development process and programs to take advantage of these new tools and techniques to improve drug development pipeline productivity and focus resources on the most promising candidates. www.healthtech.com

Description: Great strides have been made in the expression of proteins for structure and characterization studies, as well as for therapeutics and diagnostics. However, with these strides have come new obstacles. Higher throughput expression and purification, as well as more flexible expression systems and techniques are in even greater demand now to support the needs of the research pipeline. It has become even more important to prevent problems in protein expression by wise choices in data analysis well before the task goes into the laboratory. This conference will explore the newest data and innovations relating to the expression and characterization of proteins for biological understanding and therapeutics, as well as strategies to make the eventual expression of these proteins more effective, efficient and trouble-free. www.healthtech.com

Description: The International Conference of Bioinformatics (InCoB) is one of largest bioinformatics conferences in the Asia-Pacific. Now in its seventh year, InCoB has enjoyed national support since its first meeting held in Bangkok on 2002 when the event was coordinated by BIOTEC and NECTEC of the Thai science and technology agency, NSTDA. Subsequently, this conference was held in Penang (Malaysia), Auckland (New Zealand), Busan (Korea), Delhi (India) and Hong Kong. True to its origins, although this meeting emphasizes more on the biological aspects and applications of bioinformatics than the informational and computing aspects, all are welcome. Today, bioinformatics practitioners from both biology or computing backgrounds attend this annual meeting. Moreover, InCoB is now hosted on a regular basis as an official annual conference for the Asia-Pacific Bioinformatics Network (APBioNet), a network of people associated with the advancement of bioinformatics in the Asia Pacific region for the past 10 years since its inception in 1998. The annual general meeting (AGM) of APBioNet is held within the InCoB conference annually. Key strategic initiatives to promote the bioinformatics revolution in our life science research and educational community are discussed at the AGM. To attract and support local bioinformaticians, InCoB 2008 will be held together with the Bioinformatics and Systems Biology in Taiwan (BIT 2008) conference from Oct. 20 to 22, 2008. To involve bioscientists in this meeting, InCoB 2008 will be held back-to-back with the Federation of Asian and Oceanian Biochemists and Molecular Biologists (FAOBMB) symposium (Oct. 24 to 25, 2008). The workshops and tutorials will be held on Oct. 23, so the audience from both conferences may interact with one another. Also, on Oct. 23, APBioNet is organizing an IUBMB-funded Workshop on Education in Bioinformatics and Computational Biology, to revive and continue the pioneering efforts of the Workshops on Education in Bioinformatics (WEB, the ISMB Specicial Interest Group Meetings). In keeping with the increasing quality of the conference, InCoB this year will continue to publish the best papers presented in the conference track in BMC Bioinformatics (Impact Factor 3.62) and also in Bioinformation, just as we have in the past two years. In order to showcase the research arising from this region, a new Highlights track is now available. The Technology track will afford an opportunity to present software, databases and web services.

Description: Although therapeutic antibodies have come a long way in the past several years, many problems still exist in the production and use of these complex molecules. The negative qualities of these proteins, including immunogenicity, delivery difficulties, and the high cost of production, among others, have made the outcomes of their production and use less than satisfactory. In order to improve or eliminate these negatives, it is critical to find new ways to engineer antibodies, new antibody alternatives (such as mimetics, fragments, etc.) and novel ways to scale up production to provide large amounts of these proteins in a cost-effective way. This conference will present the latest data on how to achieve these improved results and the research data necessary to apply the solutions to your laboratory’s efforts. www.healthtech.com
