Editorial note

It has come to the attention of the Executive Editors of Bioinformatics that there is significant overlap between the following publications:

Rodin A, Mosley TH Jr, Clark AG, Sing CF, Boerwinkle E. Mining genetic epidemiology data with Bayesian networks application to APOE gene variation and plasma lipid levels. J. Comput. Biol. 2005;12(1): 1–11.

Rodin AS, Boerwinkle E. Mining genetic epidemiology data with Bayesian networks I: Bayesian networks and example application (plasma apoE levels).

There are considerable similarities between the results presented in the two publications, including a number of identical figures and tables. However neither of the publications cites the other and the Editors were not informed that the related work had been submitted to the Journal of Computational Biology.

The Editors of Bioinformatics would like to draw attention to the following journal policy, outlined in the Instructions to Authors:

PREVIOUS PUBLICATION

Submission of a manuscript implies that it reports unpublished work, that it is not under consideration for publication elsewhere and that, if accepted, it will not be published elsewhere in the same form, either in English or in any other language, without the consent of the publisher. Authors should provide the references of similar work that they have already published, or which is currently under consideration by another journal. If the work has previously been presented at a conference, authors should provide details in the covering letter. The journal will consider publication of work that has previously been presented as either a short abstract or poster at a conference, but not as a full paper. If previously published tables, illustrations or more than 200 words of text are to be included, then the copyright holder's written permission must be obtained. Include copies of any such permission letters with your paper.
